3 Holiday (and year-round) Self-Care Tips

We are right in the swing of the Holiday season, and for many of us that means shopping, cooking, chores, parties, and just general craziness. I’m sure we’ve all seen our share of Hallmark movies, and I’m sure we’ve all laughed at how unrealistic they make Holiday preparation look. I don’t know about you, but I feel like I’m racing against the clock and just a minute behind this time of year.

The Holidays can be stressful, and for some they can bring up bittersweet memories and reminders of loved ones who may no longer be with us. It can also be a time of enjoyment, sharing, and celebration of memories and moments. This Holiday let’s all take some time to look after ourselves and be effective with our self-care so we can make the most of the next few weeks.

Self-Care

Self-care can be anything you want it to be. It doesn’t have to look like spas, massages, or exercise. It can be taking an hour to watch your favourite show, having a nap after work, or turning down 1 of your 3 Holiday work events because you need a night in. Giving yourself some time to do the things you need to do to reduce your stress and take a deep breath is important this time of year.

Exercise

We can’t separate the interaction between our body and our brain. When we are stressed, we often experience more pain, and when we are relaxed we often feel better. This is a two-way street, and when we stay active and dedicate some time to exercise we often feel better in every way. Take a moment to go for a walk, lift some weights, or try out a new winter sport. Whatever exercise you choose, make sure you have some fun! Find something you enjoy and carve out some time to get moving this Holiday.

Have Fun

Do the things you want to do this Holiday. I know there may be family obligations, work obligations, and errands to run, but don’t forget to enjoy yourself. Plan a day to do an activity you love. Revive a tradition or start a new one that brings you joy! The next couple weeks may pass by in a blur, but try your best to let yourself enjoy this time as well.

Get a Helping Hand

As a chiropractor I can do more than just adjust, in fact for many of my patients, we don’t adjust at all! I’m trained to assess and treat back pain, neck pain, headaches and all types of musculoskeletal injuries. Some treatment techniques I use daily include deep-tissue massage, acupuncture, therapeutic exercise (those feel-good kinds of exercise), mindfulness, stress-reduction strategies, and adjustments as needed.

If you’re feeling a bit beat up and could use a helping hand to get you feeling great and performing your best, don’t hesitate to reach out.
